What Are Emotions?
At their core, emotions are mental states brought about by neurophysiological changes associated with thoughts, feelings, behavioural responses, and a degree of pleasure or displeasure. In other words, they’re the result of changes in our brain and body that occur in response to certain stimuli. These changes can be caused by things like thoughts, memories, external events, or even just our physical environment.
Different Types of Emotions
There are four main types of emotions: positive (e.g., happiness, love), negative (e.g., sadness, anger), cognitive (e.g., fear), and physiological (e.g., stress). While all four types of emotions are important, positive and negative emotions tend to get the most attention because they’re the most salient (i.e., noticeable). That said, cognitive and physiological emotions are also crucial because they serve as warning signs that help us cope with potentially dangerous situations.
The Difference Between Emotions and Feelings
It’s important to note that there’s a distinction between emotions and feelings. Whereas emotions are mental states brought about by neurophysiological changes, feelings are the conscious experience of those mental states. In other words, feelings are what we notice when we’re emotionally aroused. For example, when we see a scary movie, we may experience fear (an emotion) which manifests itself as a feeling of anxiety or dread.
Ways of Emotional Empowerment –
There are many things we can do to develop emotional intelligence. Here are just a few:
* Identify our emotions as per the names of different feelings (e.g., “When you’re feeling sad, that means you’re experiencing low energy levels and might want to cry”)
* Recognize your emotional reactions (e.g., “I see that you’re really angry right now”)
* Notice your nonverbal cues (e.g., “You seem tense”)
* Refrain from judgment (e.g., “It sounds like you’re really upset about what happened”)
* Validate your experiences (e .g., “That must have been really confusing/scary/frustrating for you”) understanding feelings doesn’t mean that you have to agree with them—it simply means acknowledging them)
* Label your feelings (e .g., “When you feel like this , it’s called ‘sadness'”) Like why they might be feeling a certain way (e .g., “You might be feeling scared because you’re in a new environment”)
* and some effective coping strategies (e .g., “When you’re feeling angry , one thing you could do is take some deep breaths or go for a walk”)
* Encourage yourself to express yourself through creative outlets such as art , music , or writing.
